Interior of the church of Our Lady of Paradise. The monks had to smuggle their belonging out of France. They hid their valuables in hay wagons and took them to Calais, where they loaded them onto a boat which had been brought over from Southampton by their English agent. However, the customs men at Calais became suspicious and when the boat left the harbour their officers followed in pursuit. Luckily the customs men chased across the channel at such a speed that their steam engine blew up, so the monks' belongings crossed safely to Southampton.
