This photo is from 'A History of Martin', written and illustrated with photographs and drawings by the Rev. Edward Peacock in 1863. He lived with his wife Eleanor at Read's Farm. His hand written notebook can be seen in Hampshire Records Office. The chalk track was a winterbourne and would have flooded during the winter. Plank bridges were used during this time along the village. This continued until the drains were put in after the Second World War.
