W. J. Hemp was an archaeologist who got to know James Lawes when he worked on the excavation of Roman Silchester. Dr James Fairweather Milne was intrigued by Hudson's book 'A Shepherd's Life', which was inspired by Lawes, and, together with Mr Lane-Poole, who lived at Harris Farm, set about discovering what he could about the family.
