Comment
Daphne Lawes was the great-grandaughter of William Lawes, the brother of James Lawes. William went to live in Hinton Martell after meeting a farmer on the road looking for labour. an incident W. H. Hudson wrote about in 'A Shepherd's Life'. In the 1950s' James Fairweather Milne and E. H. Lane Poole set about tracing the Lawes family and met Daphne. Together they traced the daughter-in-law of James and Emma Lawes and also put a plaque on the tombstone of Daphne's great-great-grandfather, who was made famous in Hudson's book as the shepherd Isaac Bawcombe.
