The Reverend Edward Peacock wrote a short illustrated history of Martin which can be found at Hampshire Records Office in Winchester. He was a country gentleman who inherited most of the copyholds of Martin through marriage to his wife, Eleanor Hodding. Eleanor was the daughter of his Bishop and the granddaughter of George Reade of Fryern Court. Rev. Peacock added considerably to the land that she owned by purchase and is recorded as the principle landowner in Martin. They lived at Read's Farm. In 1896 he presented the church with a chair which he had made and carved. In 1869 he published an article called 'The Downs' in the Wilts Archaeological and Natural History Magazine Vol XI.
