- This chapter describes a true story. Elijah Raven is based on Malachi Martin, who lived at Harris Farm. James Lawes, (Caleb Bawcombe) was the injured shepherd involved in a similar lawsuit and Farmer Sutton was his employer at the time. See the note which accompanies this extract.
