Comment
In his book about the life of a Downland shepherd Hudson protected the identity of Martin by calling it Winterbourne Bishop. The book was so popular that long after it was published there was speculation in the national press about the true location of the village. Some of that correspondence can be read in this archive. 'A Shepherd's Life' has remained constantly in print for over a hundred years. Even today people visit the village to see the grave of the shepherd William Lawes, immortalised in the book as Isaac Bawcombe.
