Comment
Between 1965 and 1970, solicitor Gordon Maidment successfully defended the interests of the village in a High Court battle which threatened to rob farmers of their grazing rights on Martin Down. There was even talk at the time of the down becoming a golf course. Together with determined local farmers he saved the down, which was subsequently put up for sale. The down was bought by The Nature Conservancy and Hampshire County Council, and then became open to the public.

Note, the name Taylor is incorrect - it was Mrs Turner who was one of the plaintiffs.
